Raman spectroscopy

Polarized and unpolarized spectra of the samples can be obtained in micro-Raman and macro-Raman set-ups, where temperature and magnetic field can be change in the ranges 3 k – 800 K and 0 – 7 T, respectively. The 632.8, 514, and 488 nm polarized lines of He-Ne, and argon lasers are available as excitation with adjustable incident power impinging on the sample. The scattered light is analyzed using a T64000 Jobin-Yvon spectrometer, operating in triple subtractive mode, and equipped with liquid nitrogen cooled charge-coupled device and photon-counting device. The spectral slit width is better than 1.5 cm−1.


 
 

Home-built dual-color pump-probe system with record sub-10-fs resolution

This is a state-of-the-art time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) apparatus based on a dual-colour scheme for the measurement of spin dynamics, observation of ultrafast demagnetization and precessional dynamics in ferromagnetic materials. By using hollow-fibre and chirped mirror pulse compression techniques it enables attaining an ultimate temporal resolution in the sub-10 fs range.

SQUID Magnetometer

The SQUID magnetometer (Quantum design Ref: MPMS-5S since 1991) - a device measuring the strength of the magnetic moment produced by a magnetized sample with sensitivity of 1E-8 emu. The device allows measurements in the fields up to 5.5 T and in the temperature range of 1.9-400 K. The measurements can be performed in the DC modes. This interaction with other institutions has always been performed on the basis of scientific collaboration and formation of young scientists. The system is traceable to standards of the magnetic field and moment. The magnetometer is also open for commercial exploitation - please contact us.

The facility at IFIMUP has following features:

  • Temperature range 1.9 K-330K (330K-800K in case of Oven)
  • Magnetic field up to 5.5KOe
  • Maximum Sample Size: 9 mm<
  • Field Uniformity: 0.01% over 4 cm

The SQUID is equipped with following equipments:

X-Ray Diffractometry

The X-ray diffractometry laboratory is an open service for all users and operates mainly on physical-chemical characterization ranging from crystallographic studies or thin films thickness measurements to analysis of texture and porosity/size of inorganic materials, etc. This transversal facility is not only suitable for a pure departmental research but also available as a commercially operated resource to outside companies.
Our equipment consists of a Siemens D5000X-ray difractometer, capable of identifying crystalline phases down to 3% of the bulk. It is also used to collect extremely accurate data adequate to Rietveld analysis, resorting to programs such as Fullprof, Rietica,PowderCell, GSAS, etc.
This particular equipment consists of a θ/2θ diffraction instrument operating in the reflection geometry. A CuK α1 is used as radiation source with λ = 1.54056 Å, focused by a primary Ge crystal monochromator. The detector is a standard scintillation counter.
The Cu tube runs at 40mA and 40kV. The cooling is supplied by an internal water-filled recirculating chilling system, running at approximately 16 ºC with a flow rate of 4 - 4.5 L/min. The slit arrangement is usually a 2 mm pre-sample slit, 2 mm post-sample slit and a 0.2 mm detector slit. However, and if necessary, a range of slits is also available depending on the type of experiment and angular range required.

Materials Laboratory

The materials laboratory of IFIMUP-IN can provide several kinds of services depending on the equipment selected. The following equipment is available:

  • HOTTE
  • MICROCUT MACHINE
  • 2 FURNACES
  • APERIODIC GENERATOR
  • ENCAPSULATION OF QUARTZ TUBES WITH BLOWTORCH OF H2/O2

Furnace # 1:

Tubular furnace has a diameter of approximately 4 cm and length 50 cm. The temperature ramps are made in ºC/hour with a minimum value of 1 ºC/hour.
The maximum temperature that it can work in continuous is 1100 ºC. It can work in vacuum, air, Oor Ar flows.


Furnace # 2:

Square furnace has an area of approximately 15x10 cm2 and 25 cm of depth.
The temperature ramps are defined by introducing the time to reach the desired temperature. Therefore, the values ?of minimum ramp can be quite small. The maximum temperature ramp is 10 ºC/min. This oven has two operating positions, one to work with the door closed and another to work with the door open, where it is inserted a firebrick. The maximum temperature that it can work continuously is 1100 ºC. It can work in vacuum, air, Oor Ar flows.


Aperiodic Generator:

The aperiodic generator is a high or medium frequency regulated voltage source. It contains primarily the following: a) thyristor AC controller; b) a voltage step up transformer for the vaccum triod HV supply; c) a rectifier stage connected as a silicon diode 6 pulse bridge; d) an oscillating cell including one or more triodes connected in parallel depending on the power required; e) the adapter autotransformer(s) referred to as aperiodic transformers enabling supplying of the downstream oscillating circuit at a lower voltage.
